The program went into effect on May 1 and benefits low-income families.
Low-income New Yorkers or those suffering from illnesses made worse by summer temperatures are eligible for free air conditioning through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
Governor Andrew Cuomo's office is asking eligible residents to sign up for the program as soon as possible, available May 1, to get their cooling system installed ahead of rising temperatures.
Last year some 4,000 households benefited from the program.
